School Budget Revotes Set for June 16

Five Long Island school districts will present revised spending plans for a revote on June 16 after voters rejected their initial budgets in May. Bayport-Blue Point is seeking a 2% tax levy increase (down from 2.75%), still requiring a 60% supermajority to pass. South Country adopted a new plan with a 5.52% levy increase after voters overwhelmingly rejected their initial 13.45% proposal. The districts have made cuts to staffing and programs in hopes of gaining voter support. Read full story β†’

Long Beach Man Indicted in Fatal Stabbing of Bellport Mother

A 40-year-old Long Beach man has been indicted on second-degree murder charges in the death of a 30-year-old Bellport mother of three. Prosecutors say the victim was allegedly stabbed inside her vehicle in Shirley and Yaphank before being found critically injured at a Yaphank gas station. An off-duty police captain noticed blood on the vehicle and followed it to a Speedway, where the suspect was arrested. The defendant faces up to 25 years to life in prison if convicted. BBP Heritage Association Summer House Tours Begin June 6 – The Bayport-Blue Point Heritage Association welcomes summer with house tours at the historic Meadow Croft Estate. Tours begin Saturday, June 6th and continue weekends through October, Saturdays and Sundays from 2:00–4:00 p.m. Visitors can explore the main house and carriage house while learning about local history.
