Suffolk County police are swapping the squad car for a coffee cup on Wednesday.

Officers will join departments across the country for National Coffee with a Cop Day, an event built around relaxed, face-to-face conversation.

The goal is simple: put residents and police in the same room without a crisis in the background.

Think casual chat, not formal meeting.

Officials say the format encourages positive interactions and gives neighbors a chance to ask questions they might never raise at a public meeting.

There are seven Coffee with a Cop gatherings scheduled around the county throughout the day.

Closest to the Patchogue area, the 5th Precinct will be at the BJ's Wholesale Club on Sunrise Highway in North Bellport from noon to 1:30 p.m.

Farther east, the 7th Precinct will set up at the Home Depot on William Floyd Parkway in Shirley from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Meanwhile, 6th Precinct officers will meet residents at the Longwood Public Library in Middle Island from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Four more events are scheduled elsewhere in the county.

The timing makes it easy to stop by during a lunch break or between errands.

Events like this matter because trust between police and the people they serve is built in small, ordinary moments.

A friendly conversation over coffee can do more than a press release ever will.

Anyone curious about neighborhood safety or how the department works can simply walk up and start a conversation.

Check each location's hours before heading out, since the gatherings run at different times.

For anyone in the Patchogue area, the North Bellport stop is the easiest to reach.
