Patchogue Village Board Meeting |
Trustees accept the resignation of the village's longtime public safety director and move to rebuild a fire-damaged brewery wastewater system |

The Patchogue Village Board packed a lot into its Monday, Sept. 28 meeting, from a revised downtown hotel plan to the departure of a longtime public safety leader.
The biggest storyline remains the proposed hotel at 138 West Avenue.
The planning board reopened the application on Sept. 22 to consider a revised plan with 136 rooms and no apartments.
Some of the rooms would be extended-stay suites, but none would include kitchens.
The developer also shifted the event space toward Division Street, away from the residential area behind the site.
Parking remains the biggest unresolved issue, and the planning board adjourned the application to a special meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 13, at 5 p.m.
The village board will meet right after, at 6 p.m.
To prepare, trustees approved hiring Level G Associates to review the hotel's parking management plan for up to $3,975, a cost the applicant will cover.
Officials said the review is on a fast track and should be finished before the Oct. 13 hearing.
One resident also pressed the board on traffic around River Avenue and Division Street, arguing that an older traffic study no longer reflects how that intersection looks today.
Officials said traffic will be part of the conversation going forward.
The board also accepted, with regret, the resignation of the village's director of public safety, effective Oct. 1.
He has led the department for 18 years, following a 25-year career as a police officer.
In his resignation letter, he offered to stay on as long as needed to help his successor get comfortable in the role.
Trustees credited him with building the department's professionalism, noting the village is a very different place than it was when he started.
The board also moved to rebuild the brewery wastewater pretreatment system at the village treatment plant, which was damaged in a fire a couple of months ago.
That system treats effluent from Blue Point Brewery before it can be mixed with the rest of the village's wastewater.
Trustees approved an H2M feasibility study at $65,000 for the main work, while a separate line for meetings was approved pending clarification after questions about how it was written.
A state engineering planning grant of up to $50,000 will help offset the cost.
The board approved out-of-district sewer connections for a proposed retail project at 154-164 Waverly Avenue, the long-vacant former tobacco warehouse, and for a proposed mixed-use development at 326 East Main Street in East Patchogue.
Trustees also approved H2M plans to demolish the old incinerator building at the public works yard on Waverly Avenue and design a new salt shed, at $90,000 for phase one and $187,200 for phase two.
Park upgrades are getting closer too, with a $570,000 state grant set to add a tennis court, two pickleball courts and a hockey rink alongside an existing basketball half court and playground.
Officials hope to finish that work before winter.
In planning news, Burgerology received approval for a new sign as it moves into the former Spycoast space, and another restaurant was approved to expand from 49 to 122 seats.
The zoning board adjourned an application from Stereo Garden after asking for more information about the types of events held there.
The village also raised its 5K race fee from $500 to $750 to better cover its costs.
Late-night crowds on Main Street came up again as well, with officials saying a series of internal meetings is underway on a possible way to regulate nightclubs, which are not currently a permitted use in the village.
For families, a pumpkin patch scavenger hunt is set for Saturday, Oct. 17, at 10 a.m., and Walk Through the Zoo returns Nov. 14 from noon to 3 p.m.
Residents curious about the village's NY Forward grant can attend a public meeting at Village Hall on Oct. 19 at 6:30 p.m.
All eyes now turn to Oct. 13, when the hotel's parking plan heads back before the planning board.
