Brookhaven Town turned the spotlight on young achievers last Friday at its 13th annual Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration.

The evening at Town Hall in Farmingville brought together students, families, and community members.

Supervisor Dan Panico and the town's Hispanic Advisory Board hosted the gathering.

The headliners were 84 high school seniors.

Each earned a grade point average of 97 or higher, a mark of serious dedication in the classroom.

The town also honored three community members for their contributions: Sgt. Kevin Amaya, Rosa Montalvo Pacheco, and Maicol Cordoba.

The program included a performance by El Teatro Rodante Hispánico, which brought Hispanic culture, history, and traditions to life.

Panico said the month is a chance for residents to come together and celebrate the people, traditions, and stories that shape Brookhaven.

Councilman Jonathan Kornreich framed the night as a tribute to the students, families, and neighbors whose hard work and service strengthen the town every day.

Councilwoman Jane Bonner said she was honored to attend and called the evening a showcase of the rich history and heritage of the Hispanic and Latino communities.

Councilwoman Karen Dunne Kesnig said the month is the right time to formally recognize the contributions Hispanic and Latino residents have made, past and present.

It was a night that paired cultural pride with academic achievement.

The celebration is held every year to recognize the culture, history, and achievements of the Hispanic and Latino community.

It also honors local students and community members for their accomplishments.

For the seniors who made the list, the recognition is a well-earned reward for years of effort.

Nationally, Hispanic Heritage Month runs from mid-September to mid-October, so there is still time to take part in local celebrations.
