The Patchogue Community Development Agency voted unanimously to seek $150,000 in Community Development Block Grant funding from the Town of Brookhaven to upgrade accessibility at the Joseph E. Keys Recreation Center.
The proposed project aims to remove barriers for disabled residents by adding curb cuts and accessible pathways, making the soccer field, basketball courts, and community gardens more inclusive, especially for wheelchair users.
David Bell of Brookhaven explained that the funding fulfills federal mandates to support low- and moderate-income communities and enhance disabled access.
The grant would allocate $115,000 toward these improvements, with remaining funds supporting administration and housing services.
Additionally, a new federal rule now requires all local housing assistance recipients to verify citizenship status, raising concerns among board members about privacy and access.

Bayport Aerodrome Society first General Membership meeting of the year will take place on Sunday March 8th at 11am at Hangar 23. Members are invited to come out and help kick off planning for the upcoming season. |
Local artists are encouraged to apply for The Wall, a temporary mural project hosted by Patchogue Arts Council and Patchogue-Medford Library, set to anchor community activities through 2027.
The chosen artist will create a vibrant mural on the libraryâs 15-by-45-foot rear exterior wall, becoming a focal point for local gatherings throughout 2026 and 2027.
No theme restrictions apply this year, allowing artists freedom in their creative approach.
Applicants must show prior mural experience and submit a portfolio including detailed designs, a materials list, budget, preparatory sketches, mockups, and documentation of previous work.
The selected muralist will receive a $2,000 stipend, donated supplies, professional project documentation, and a solo exhibit with the Arts Council.
