Suffolk County mosquitoes and prevention tips in Patchogue, Medford, Bellport, Bayport, Blue Point |
Latest updates on West Nile virus in Bellport and mosquito activity in Blue Point |

The latest findings include one positive sample from Bay Shore, two from Lindenhurst, one from West Islip and two from Northport. Additional positive samples were also identified in Riverhead, Port Jefferson Station, Mastic Beach and Southold. Most of the mosquitoes were identified as the Culex pipiens-restuans species, with one sample from Southold identified as Aedes taeniorhynchus.
So far this season, Suffolk County has confirmed 22 mosquito samples positive for West Nile virus and three samples positive for Jamestown Canyon virus. Two dead crows found in Ronkonkoma in June also tested positive for West Nile virus. Officials said there have been no human cases reported in Suffolk County this year.
Health officials remind residents that West Nile virus is spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. Most infections cause mild or no symptoms, but older adults and people with weakened immune systems face a higher risk of serious illness. Residents are encouraged to use insect repellent, wear long sleeves and pants when outdoors during peak mosquito activity, and remove standing water around their homes. Dead birds and mosquito problems can be reported to Suffolk County health and vector control officials.
