Volunteers Strengthen Community Safety Through Suffolk County Auxiliary Police

The Suffolk County Auxiliary Police continues to welcome new volunteers who support public safety efforts across the community

The Suffolk County Auxiliary Police continues to welcome new volunteers who support public safety efforts across the community, offering extensive training and meaningful opportunities to serve.

The Suffolk County Auxiliary Police, part of the Suffolk County Police Department, has long been a vital volunteer force assisting law enforcement throughout Suffolk County. Comprised of trained peace officers assigned to each precinct, the program provides essential support during patrols, community events, severe weather, and large scale emergencies. Volunteers receive free comprehensive training that includes approximately 230 hours of coursework leading to New York State Peace Officer certification followed by annual refresher classes. Once prepared, officers contribute at least ten service hours each month, offering an extra layer of safety at parades, festivals, traffic details, and disaster responses.

Recruitment is now open countywide, with applications accepted by mail or email through the Suffolk County Police Department’s Emergency Management Unit. Applicants must meet residency, age, licensing, and background requirements and complete medical, psychological, and fitness evaluations. While Auxiliary Police do not receive hiring preference for full time police positions, they do qualify for a civil service exam fee waiver once appointed.

Community members interested in strengthening local safety efforts are encouraged to apply and learn more about the program. Information and application materials are available through the Emergency Management Unit at SCPDEmergencyManagement@suffolkcountyny.gov or by Phone (631) 852-4921 or (631) 852-6355
