The death of a 16-year-old Bayport resident is drawing renewed national attention after two U.S. senators demanded answers from TikTok about an experiment that allegedly withheld an algorithmic safety measure from millions of users, including minors.

Chase Nasca of Bayport died by suicide in February 2022. According to reporting by the Los Angeles Times and Bloomberg Businessweek, a confidential TikTok document revealed that Nasca was among a control group of users for whom a safeguard intended to interrupt repeated exposure to potentially harmful content was not activated. The control group represented about 10% of U.S. users at the time, or roughly 15 million people.

The document reportedly stated that Nasca's account received thousands of videos involving sadness, hopelessness, loneliness and suicide. It also indicated that TikTok was studying how the safety measure affected daily active users and other performance metrics. TikTok has said it is deeply committed to user safety, particularly for teenagers, and continues investing in detection systems and enforcement teams.

Sens. Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee and Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut have now asked TikTok executives to explain why minors were included in the experiment and identify other U.S. tests in which safety features were withheld or reduced. The company has been given until Sept. 1 to respond. The senators are also pushing renewed federal legislation aimed at strengthening online protections for children.

For Long Island families, the national debate carries a deeply local connection as lawmakers continue examining how social media platforms protect young users.
