New York Has a Favorite Pup, and It’s the Yorkie

Just in time for National Dog Day on Aug. 26, a new ranking shows which pups are getting the most love from New Yorkers. Taking the top spot is the Yorkshire terrier, followed by the Shih tzu and French bulldog.

Small dogs are clearly making a big impression across the Empire State. According to a U.S. News & World Report pet insurance study, Yorkshire terriers rank as New York’s most popular dog breed. Shih tzus came in at No. 2, while French bulldogs rounded out the state’s top three.

The rankings provide a fun glimpse at New Yorkers’ canine preferences ahead of National Dog Day, celebrated each year on Aug. 26.

Here on Long Island, the occasion is also a chance to celebrate the dogs that are part of local families and remember those still waiting for homes. Residents can get involved by visiting or supporting a local animal shelter or rescue, donating needed supplies, volunteering, or considering adoption when the time is right.

Whether the family favorite is a tiny Yorkie, a playful Shih tzu, a Frenchie or a lovable mixed breed, National Dog Day offers one more reason to give local pups some extra attention.
