One of the most famous Volvo P1800s in the world belonged to Irv Gordon of East Patchogue, whose passion for driving transformed a 1966 Volvo P1800S into a record-setting piece of automotive history.

Gordon, who lived from 1940 to 2018, was a Long Island teacher who purchased the car new. Over the decades that followed, he accumulated a staggering 3.2 million miles behind the wheel. His achievement earned him a Guinness World Records title for the highest mileage reached by a car with its original owner.

For Gordon, however, the extraordinary mileage was about more than setting a record. He loved to drive, and the P1800S gave him the freedom to travel throughout the United States. The car became part of his everyday life and eventually made the East Patchogue resident known to automotive enthusiasts around the world.

Long Island mechanic Nino Gambino met Gordon around 1979 and helped care for the Volvo for decades. Their relationship grew beyond that of mechanic and customer, developing into a lasting friendship built partly around the remarkable car.

Gordon died in 2018, but his P1800S continues to preserve his story. Now owned by Volvo, the car represents more than 3 million miles of travel, friendship and memories.

From East Patchogue to the record books, Gordon proved that an ordinary drive, repeated often enough, can become an extraordinary journey.
