The Bayport Fire Department sent nine firefighters across the Great South Bay on Sept. 16 to help battle a working house fire in Fire Island Pines. The blaze broke out around 1:30 p.m. in a residential structure and quickly developed into intense fire conditions that threatened neighboring homes in the densely built beach community.
A mutual aid response by water The Fire Island Pines Fire Department led the response, joined by Bayport and several other mainland and island departments. Because the Pines has no bridge or road connection to the mainland, Bayport's crew made the crossing by boat to reach the scene. Coordinated suppression and ventilation efforts brought the fire under control and kept it from spreading through the neighborhood. |
