Schools across the Bayport-Blue Point School District held remembrances this month marking the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, honoring the lives lost and helping students understand the significance of the day.
Middle School Tribute WalkAt James Wilson Young Middle School, students walked through a 9/11 tribute curated by Library Media Specialist Susan Henke-Brinkman. The exhibit guided them through stations detailing the timeline of Sept. 11 and the stories of individuals who died. The display included artifacts such as a piece of steel from the World Trade Center, a firefighter's helmet and an NYPD jacket, along with newspaper articles and news footage from the day. Students also watched a video of staff members sharing their memories from Sept. 11.
Elementary CeremoniesAcademy Street, Sylvan Avenue and Blue Point elementary schools each held outdoor remembrance ceremonies with members of BBP's local fire departments. Students waved American flags, watched their school flags raised and sang patriotic songs to honor those who were lost.
High School MemorialAt Bayport-Blue Point High School, students walked through a collection of materials displayed in the auditorium lobby, including newspapers and magazines preserved from September 2001. A piece of glass and a stairwell sign recovered from the World Trade Center gave students a tangible connection to the history.
Many of the items were donated by Social Studies Department Chairperson John Limperatos, the Ungaro family and retired teacher Sean Meade. Outside the high school, 2,977 American flags covered the front lawn, one for each life lost on Sept. 11, 2001. A 20-by-30-foot American flag was displayed on the side of the building in remembrance of those who have since died or continue to suffer from 9/11-related illnesses. Staff members wore student-designed "Phantoms We Will Never Forget" shirts produced by the school store.
Together, the remembrances gave students of all ages a chance to reflect on September 11 and ensure the stories of those lost continue to be remembered 25 years later.
