Art from Brooklyn to Patchogue: MoCA L.I. Opens New Exhibition This March

If you haven't yet made your way to MoCA L.I. on Terry Street, this spring gives you a perfect reason to go.

MoCA L.I. launches an exciting new series spotlighting artists who create in community with one another

If you haven't yet made your way to MoCA L.I. on Terry Street, this spring gives you a perfect reason to go. The Museum of Contemporary Art Long Island opens its newest exhibition, Occupying Space: 9 @ BAT, on March 7th, and it's the kind of show that reminds you why having a world-class contemporary art museum right here in Patchogue is something worth celebrating.

The exhibition runs through May 10, 2026, and kicks off with a free opening reception on Saturday, March 7th from 5 to 7 PM, with bites sponsored by Aroogas Sports Tavern & Game Room. Mark your calendar now.

What's the show about?

Occupying Space: 9 @ BAT is the first installment of MoCA L.I.'s brand new series called Art from the Hive, an ongoing program that will shine a spotlight on artists who work in close creative proximity to one another, whether that means sharing a studio building, a residency program, or a broader creative community. The idea is a compelling one: what happens to art when artists live and work side by side, breathing the same air and bumping into each other in the hallway?

For this inaugural edition, the answer comes from Brooklyn.

The nine featured artists all have ties to ChaShaMa residencies at the Brooklyn Army Terminal (BAT), a massive historic waterfront complex in Sunset Park. ChaShaMa is a New York City nonprofit that provides subsidized studio and exhibition space to artists, helping creatives sustain their practices in one of the most expensive cities in the world. The work on view spans figurative and abstract painting, sculpture, and mixed media, giving visitors a rich cross-section of what nine distinct voices, shaped by shared space, look like together.

The artists are Christina Giuffrida, Deming King, Caroline Heffron, Leekyung Kang, Linda Lee Nicholas, Macy Rajacich, Miranda Maher, Sophia Kayafas, and Whit Harris.

Want to go deeper?

On Saturday, April 11th from noon to 1 PM, MoCA L.I. hosts a Coffee with a Curator session, a relaxed and conversational look at the exhibition with the curatorial team. Attend in person at the museum or join via Zoom. Coffee is sponsored by Toast Coffee & Kitchen. The event is free.
