Pooh's Soul Food Truck Draws Crowds at Bellport Train Station |
Chavon Fredericks serves from-scratch Southern dishes Tuesday through Saturday on Montauk Highway |

Pooh's Soul Food Truck has been parked outside the Bellport train station on Montauk Highway for two months, and customers have lined up since day one. It is open Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 8 p.m.
On the menu
Owner Chavon Fredericks, known as Pooh, cooks everything from scratch. The menu includes fried whiting, chicken, pork chops, shrimp and clams, all seasoned with his own blend. Sides include collard greens, candied yams, waffle fries and macaroni and cheese.
Many customers found the truck through social media. A TikTok video of Fredericks seasoning wings drew more than 3,200 likes and 700 shares last month, and he has more than 10,000 followers across TikTok and Instagram.
Kaniesha Brown of Bellport said she saw a video of the truck on TikTok and stopped by. She said there are no brick-and-mortar soul food stores nearby, so she wanted to support it.
Who is Pooh
Fredericks, 50, is a Wyandanch native and a North Babylon High School graduate who spent part of his youth in North Carolina. His mother gave him the nickname Pooh when he was a baby.
He learned to cook soul food from his wife, Sharon. The couple opened a restaurant in Wyandanch about 20 years ago, though it was short-lived.
He got his food truck in October 2025. It started in Mastic Beach and Shirley before moving to Bellport. Before that he worked for years as a barber and ran his own shop in North Babylon, which he said helped prepare him to work with customers. He plans to grow the business.
Giving back
Fredericks gave out free hot dogs to kids this summer and sponsored a bus trip for Knicks fans to a championship parade in New York City. He also organized Suffolk County vs. Everybody, a friendly cooking competition and networking event at the American Legion in Babylon.
He recently started a GoFundMe to cover food and supplies to feed families in need, veterans and seniors. He also provided meals for people in need during the holidays last year. |
