Patchogue Village wants to hear from residents before it finalizes a plan for how the community will deal with a changing climate.

The village has opened an online community survey as part of its new Climate Change Adaptation and Resiliency Plan.

Responses are due by Nov. 27.

The survey asks residents three main things.

First, where they think the village is most vulnerable to climate change.

Second, what actions the village should take to protect itself.

Third, what they want Patchogue to look like in 2050.

For a waterfront village on the Great South Bay, those questions are far from abstract.

Last month's nor'easter brought flooding and power outages to parts of the area, a reminder of how quickly storms can disrupt daily life here.

The climate resiliency plan is meant to guide how the village prepares for those kinds of events in the years ahead.

A draft of the plan is already available on the Village of Patchogue website for anyone who wants to read it before weighing in.

The village is also taking public comment on the draft itself, separate from the survey.

That gives residents two ways to be heard: answering the survey questions, and responding directly to what the village has already written.

Residents can reach the survey through a link on the village website or by scanning the QR code on the village's notice.

Questions can go to Village Hall at 14 Baker St. in Patchogue.

Plans like this tend to shape decisions for years, from where money goes to which projects move first.

The input gathered over the next few weeks could help decide what the village protects, and how, for decades to come.
