Bellport Village Says Hello to Summer with Community Center Upgrades and Road Repair Grants |
Mayor Maureen Veitch shares updates on infrastructure investments, budget priorities, and an upcoming trustee election |
Bellport Village is welcoming summer with fresh upgrades and important community news. In a recent message from Village Hall, Mayor Maureen Veitch highlighted several key developments that residents should know about.
Community Center Refurbishment Complete
The Village recently completed a major refurbishment of the Community Center, funded by a $187,500 grant. The improvements include new curtains and window treatments, a new stage, and refinished flooring. The project also added fire-proof drapes and fresh paint throughout the facility.
"We have been reimbursed!" Mayor Veitch noted, confirming the grant funding came through successfully.
$500,000 Grant Secured for Road Repairs
The Village has also secured a $500,000 grant to help repair local roads. Recent winter storms exposed significant deferred maintenance needs, and this funding will help address urgent infrastructure issues.
However, the grant does not cover all necessary repairs. The bulkhead at Ho Hum Beach suffered serious damage over two winters and now needs substantial structural work. Heavy snow removal expenses from two massive Sunday blizzards also added to operational costs.
2026-2027 Budget Approved
The Village Board ratified a $6,729,125 budget for 2026-2027, up from $6,139,256 last year. Property taxes will cover roughly two-thirds of the budget, reflecting an 11.9% increase.
According to Village Treasurer Darcia Palmer, this translates to approximately $29 more per month per household. The increase reflects unavoidable costs, overdue investments, and rising prices for materials and diesel fuel.
"We must take care of Village assets we all use including roads, storm drains and our waterfront infrastructure," Mayor Veitch explained. "Recent winter storms exposed deferred maintenance and created expensive, urgent needs."
Village reserves have been drawn down in recent years, and maintaining adequate reserves is necessary to preserve a favorable credit rating for affordable borrowing.
Trustee Election Coming Up
Residents will have the opportunity to choose who serves the Village for the next four years in an upcoming Trustee Election. The Village encourages all homeowners to participate in the democratic process.
Get Involved
Village officials expressed gratitude to residents who volunteer their time and skills to local committees, commissions, boards, and non-profit organizations.
"It would not be Bellport without your involvement!" Mayor Veitch said. "Let us all have a great (and a safe) summer!"
