Historian and author Bill Bleyer will illuminate the Roosevelt family’s enduring ties to New York City at the Bayport-Blue Point Heritage Association’s general meeting on Sunday, February 15, 2026, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at the BBP Library.
Drawing on his newest book, The Roosevelts in New York City, Bleyer invites guests on a captivating armchair tour through the Manhattan streets and neighborhoods central to the Roosevelts’ lives.
Highlights include the preserved East 20th Street brownstone where Theodore Roosevelt grew up, and the adjacent home of his conservation-minded uncle, Robert Barnwell Roosevelt, who spent summers in Bayport.
Bleyer, a Pulitzer Prize winner with a passion for local history, will also spotlight the family’s move to the East 65th Street townhouse built for Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt.
The event is free and open to all, with signed books available.
Locals are encouraged to join, celebrate Bayport’s connection to the Roosevelt legacy, and gain fresh perspective on regional history. Read More... |
Brookhaven Highway Department has received a $293,000 grant from New York State’s Department of Environmental Conservation to modernize winter road maintenance.
The funding will help purchase brine sprayers and plow guards, allowing for more precise brine application and extending plow blade life.
By introducing these tools, the department aims to minimize harmful salt runoff into local surface waters and reduce groundwater contamination.
Highway Superintendent Daniel Losquadro notes that enhanced brine applicators will help cut salt usage by up to 70% compared to traditional methods.
The new, efficient plow guards will further reduce equipment downtime and support more effective snow and ice removal, allowing operators to stay on the roads longer during storms.
With these changes, Brookhaven expects to decrease its annual rock salt usage—now averaging 13,872 tons—by up to 30%, helping to protect local waterways and maintain safer roads. Read More... |
