Patchogue-Medford Library Partners with Sheriff on R.E.A.D. Reentry Program |
New initiative provides library cards to individuals leaving incarceration, connecting them with educational and employment resources |
The Patchogue-Medford Library has joined forces with the Suffolk County Sheriff's Office to launch the Reentry Education and Access to Discovery (R.E.A.D.) program, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at supporting individuals transitioning back into the community after incarceration.
This collaboration provides participants with library cards while still incarcerated, granting them access to a wealth of resources upon release. By connecting these individuals to educational materials, job search tools, and technological services, the program seeks to facilitate a smoother reintegration process.
Sheriff Errol Toulon emphasized the importance of this initiative, noting that a significant majority of incarcerated individuals eventually return to society. Providing them with essential tools and resources is vital for their success and the overall well-being of the community.
Kevin Verbesey, executive director of the Suffolk Cooperative Library System, highlighted the role of public libraries in ensuring accessibility for all community members. He expressed gratitude for the Sheriff's Office's recognition of libraries as pivotal partners in the reentry process.
Danielle Paisley, director of the Patchogue-Medford Library, expressed pride in participating in the R.E.A.D. program. She underscored the library's commitment to being a resource for those returning to the community, offering information, support, and a path forward.
The Sheriffâs Transition and Reentry Team (START) will oversee the program, maintaining a database of eligible individuals and distributing library cards upon their release. These cards, valid for 90 days, provide access to various services without indicating prior incarceration, ensuring privacy and dignity.
Through this partnership, the Patchogue-Medford Library and the Suffolk County Sheriff's Office are taking significant steps to support reentry efforts, emphasizing the transformative power of education and community resources in reducing recidivism and fostering a more inclusive society. |
